Govt miffed, orders probe into Delhi airport flooding

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation will probe reasons for disruption of flight operations and damage to the newly-constructed terminal at the Delhi airport due to heavy rains.
The Civil Aviation Ministry took serious note of the damages including the blowing off a part of the roof of the swanky new terminal 1-D, the flooding of tarmac and the arrival terminal and disruption of flights due to the heavy rains which lashed the capital last evening.
It asked the DGCA to fix accountability and suggest appropriate action under its licensing and regulatory powers, an official spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the DGCA has also been asked to suggest remedial action to prevent any such occurrence in the future.
The DGCA has been asked to complete the enquiry in two months and submit the report to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The DGCA enquiry would run parallel to another probe ordered by the airport operator, DIAL to be conducted by a four-member high-level committee consisting of R S S L N Bhaskarudu, an independent director of DIAL, P S Nair CEO-DIAL, P Seth from the Airports Authority of India.
The DGCA probe would ascertain cause and contributory factors resulting in disruption of flight operations and damage to the facilities at the new domestic departure terminal building, the spokesperson said.
The DGCA will also make recommendations for prevention of occurrence of such incident in future and various measures to strengthen oversight mechanism on development, operation and maintenance of new aerodromes including expansion of the existing ones, she said, adding it will take necessary assistance from technical experts wherever required.
